Today, most of our large urban areas are filled with technology, from sensors to artificial intelligence and even fiber optic cables underneath roads. But what about in the next 50 years? What will cities look like then?
Many forms of digital content (e.g. games, TV, movies) have done their best to describe different versions of futuristic cities, but they all have a few things in common: boxy shapes, tech up the wazoo, and a dystopian motif. The fact of the matter is, such avant-guarde concepts won't, and can't be implemented into our societies.
So, what will change? Travel through this "interactive essay" to find a more reasonable picture of the future of our urban areas.
This site is part of my Virtual Final Projects collection. I enjoy taking these more cumulative projects to the next level, which also lets me publish them later for the world to see.
For this specific project, here are some suggestions for having the best experience possible
While you could use a mobile device to traverse this site, I highly recommend using a computer. The site is designed to be viewed on a large screen, and the content is best experienced on a desktop or laptop.
Citations, relevant links and more are available by clicking the red button at the bottom right of the screen, and (usually) referenced with a superscript number1. All citations will be available at the end of the essay.
